Quite a basic text only site, and not very intuitive to navigate. I’m not sure of its purpose or hertitage, but there are some useful (if not full referenced) testimonies from different US soldiers of  different divisions.

Museum of Broadcast Communication, US

This museum hosts a free archive of thousands of American tv and radio broadcasts in its archives. You can access them all online by creating a free and quick account.

Results for an arbitrary search of ‘Holocaust’ brings results for 16 full programmes, including the 1978 series Holocaust (NBC, starring Meryl Streep).

I continue to be staggered by the sheer volume of what is available to us if you just search a bit deeper!

“Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies is a collection of over 4,400 videotaped interviews with witnesses and survivors of the Holocaust. Part of Yale University’s department of Manuscripts and Archives, the archive is located at Sterling Memorial Library”

Most of the content is onsite  at the Sterling Memorial Library(not much good for me in London!), but some edited thematic videos and excerpts for single testimonies are available, including one of a liberator at Mauthausen.

Postscript:  The testimonies in the archive have been analysed with great sensitivity and understanding by Lawrence L. Langer in his book Holocaust Testimonies. Reviewed in NY Times here: http://www.nytimes.com/books/98/12/06/specials/langer-holocaust.html

I have found this website to be a bit temperamental, but do persevere. Didn’t seem to like Google Chrome, so might be better in a different browser (Firefox, Safari, IE etc)

The USF Libraries Oral History Program is currently processing the 150 interviews that were conducted by author Michael Hirsh as primary source material for his book The Liberators.

The first 31 interviews and transcripts are now available online.  The collection will continue to grow as interviews are processed.”

“Young American soldier Howard Cwick, son of Polish Jewish immigrants, unexpectedly arrived at the gates of Buchenwald concentration camp in April 1945, armed with a rifle and his camera. In his testimony, Howard provides an eloquent, striking account of his experiences. The lesson’s theme, Eyewitness to History, explores Howard’s roles as eyewitness, liberator, and activist.”

–MEMORY OF THE CAMPS

Sixty years ago, in the spring of 1945, Allied forces liberating Europe found evidence of atrocities which have tortured the world’s conscience ever since. As the troops entered the German concentration camps, they made a systematic film record of what they saw. Work began in the summer of 1945 on the documentary, but the film was left unfinished. FRONTLINE found it stored in a vault of London’s Imperial War Museum and, in 1985, broadcast it for the first time using the title the Imperial War Museum gave it, “Memory of the Camps.”
